Books In Print Professional F.A.Q.'s
Q: What are Bowker Subject Headings?
A: Bowker subjects are modeled on the LC classification system, but are not an exact match for LC. They are "LC style" in that they are of the form "subject--subdivision--subdivision--etc", and we use LC phrasing (like "Algebra, Linear" instead of "Linear Algebra"). But we are less specific than LC.
Q: What is the difference between the "Subject Search" function found in in Advance Search and the "Browse" function found in the header?
A: "Subject Search" displays every book that has that word in the subject. "Browse" only displays the subject headings that begin with your search terms.
Q: Does an institution's administrator have the ability to delete password protected lists in Books in Print Professional?
A: Yes.
Q: Does an institution's administrator have the ability to delete password protected lists in Patron Books in Print?
A: No.
Q: Can you explain Z39.50?
A: BooksInPrint.com is a z39.50 server, as well as a client. Libraries with meta searching engines (or what they now call federated searching) can include a z39.50 search of BooksInPrint.com in their OPAC. This means that Sirsi, for example, can search multiple databases for information, not just the local OPAC, and BIP.com can be one of those sources. Books In Print information is displayed in the library's OPAC interface.
Q: How much information displays for the "First Chapter" feature?
A: We estimate that the great majority of Chapter One excerpts, more than 97%, are from initial (first chapter) text. They are truncated to about 17K characters. This generally represents 10-15 pages of book text. It may represent all or part of the first chapter. If it is not the full first chapter, the excerpt contains the notation "Continues." Excerpts containing the full first chapter are usually those of fiction works.
Q: How many lists can I have?
A: There is no limit.
Q: How many items can I have on a list?

Q: Where does the call number come from?
A: Library of Congress.

A: These go back as far as 2003.

Q: Can you search for pre-bound books?
A: Yes. "Binding" is a dropdown field on the Advanced Search page. "Binding=prebound" will yield more than 18,000 items.
Q: What format does the Download tab use?
A: MARC21.
Q: What does "out of stock indefinitely" mean?
A: We consider out of stock indefinitely to be out of print. It may be printed again at some point, but at the current time it is not.
Q: What format does Baker and Taylor use for their download orders?
A: They use a text file format (in the ISBN Import menu option). You can have a file either with ISBN only or a file with ISBN and quantity. If this is the functionality you want to use, you can download the brief format in CSV and then cut out all the fields except ISBN.
